Easy Quilt Blocks Using Half Square Triangles

Half Square Triangles are the perfect beginner quilting technique. They are easy to learn. They can be mixed and matched to make to make both simple and elaborate designs. Our Half Square Triangle Tutorial will show you how to make these fun quilt blocks. This sewing tutorial also includes four quilt block patterns that you can download to create mini quilts or a large throw quilt. We used fabrics from the Between fabric collection by Alison Glass for all the images in this tutorial.

Zipper Bag

Zipper Bags are a blast to make. This free pattern utilizes the box pleat technique. You will also sew a zipper for this project. The size of this bag is perfect for travel and easily fits toiletries, office supplies, sewing notions, and anything else you need to have close at hand.

First Aid Bag

We adapted the Zipper Bag sewing pattern above and to create a First Aid Bag Pattern. This tutorial utilizes basic quilting skills to create the bag. It is a nice way to upgrade the basic zipper bag pattern with a little something extra. This bag is the right size to carry all your first aid needs – Band-Aids, bug spray, gauze pads, sunblock, and even lip balm. Fabric from the Rifle Paper Company was used to create this fun project.

Rainbow Zipper Bag

The Rainbow Zipper Bag celebrates color. This is an intermediate foundation paper piecing project. Have you ever tried the foundation paper piecing sewing technique? It is relatively easy to learn. Check out our tutorial to learn more. Century Solids cotton fabrics from Andover Fabrics were used to create this adorable free sewing pattern.

Heart Zipper Bag

As you can see, we love zipper bags! This Heart Zipper Bag sewing pattern was inspired by Valentine’s Day. It is a foundation paper piecing project, however, much simpler than the Rainbow Zipper Bag above. We used Century Solids fabric again to make this bag, but it would be adorable made with patterned prints as well. The Stardust fabric collection from Cloud 9 Fabrics would work great with this sewing tutorial.

Pie Trivet

The Pie Trivet pattern was created to celebrate National Pie Day. This beginner friendly sewing tutorial will protect your table from heat and add a little cuteness at the same time. We used the Under the Apple Tree fabric collection to make this pattern.

Rag Wreath

Here is an easy craft project that utilizes your fabric stash. It is child friendly and will add a little cheer to your home. We created this Rag Wreath Tutorial for the holidays, but by changing out the fabric palette, you can easily create a festive wreath for any season or holiday. Fabrics from the Alison Glass Sun Print Luminance collection were used to make this wreath.

Christmas Tree Table Runner

Here is another holiday themed sewing project. The Christmas Tree Table Runner pattern is a foundation paper piecing project and beginner friendly. It is a versatile project. Using red and green fabric will create Christmas décor, but by changing out the fabric colors, this pattern can be used beyond the holidays.

Being able to sew your own pillowcase means that you can customize the fabric and the size of it, so you can make sure your pillow looks just the way you want it and is super comfy. Headbands are so useful! Keep your hair tied back and out of the way with a custom headband. This Headband Pattern was created with a beach trip in mind. In Michigan, we are surrounded by lakes, and we try to head to the beach anytime we can. This beginner friendly sewing project will add a little color and fun to your hair décor.

Rolling Flag Table Runner

Table runner sewing patterns are basically mini quilts. They can go quite a bit faster than a full-sized quilt and add color and beauty to your dining tables. This Rolling Flag Table Runner pattern was designed with the Forth of July in mind. Reds, blues, and creams were used to create this fun project. We used fabrics from the Cotton + Steel Basics collection to sew this up.

Spring Placemats

Placemats add color and life to a spring table. By using a traditional quilt block, with spring floral fabrics, you can create cheerful décor. The “Frayed Sawtooth Block” is a quilting standard. Doesn’t it look great as a placement? It is super easy to make so you can have fresh new table décor in no time! We used the Perennial fabric collection from Cloud 9 Fabrics to create this placemat. This finished size of this placemat is 16” x 16”.
