CREATE GIFT BAG:
Cut out two square notches at one of the 6 1/2” edges of both the exterior and the lining fabrics that are 1½” x 1½” in size.
STEP 1: SEW EXTERIOR & LINING FABRICS
Face right sides of Exterior Fabric together, lining up all the sides evenly. Pin to hold in place. Sew along the two long sides and along the bottom of width. Backstitch at the beginning and end of the seam to hold stitches in place. Do not sew the 1½” x 1½” cutouts.
Face right sides of Lining Fabric together, lining up all the sides evenly. Pin to hold in place. Place two pins along the bottom width approximately 1½” apart. You will not sew in this space. Sew along the two long sides and along the bottom of width making sure to not sew in the 1½” gap & 1½” x 1½” cutouts. Backstitch at the beginning and end of the seam to hold stitches in place. Press open 1½” gap seam.
STEP 2: CREATE BOX CORNERS
Pull the top and bottom layers of one corner apart, pinch together so that the top seam lines up with the bottom seam. Pin in place and sew across using a 1/4” seam allowance. Repeat with all remaining exterior and interior corners.
STEP 3: CREATE HOLE FOR BOW
Mark a ½” x ½” box centered on one side of the wrong side of the sewn lining fabric 1¾” down from the top open edge and centered horizontally (Diagram 1). Draw an “X” across the center of the box (Diagram 2).
Cut along “X” Lines in box and open-up all four sides. Press and Glue Baste open triangles to hold in place.
STEP 4: INSERT EXTERIOR FABRIC INTO LINING
Place Exterior Fabric - RIGHT SIDE OUT - inside the Lining Fabric - WRONG SIDE OUT. The RIGHT SIDES of both fabrics should be touching each other.
STEP 5: ATTACH FABRICS TOGETHER
Pin along top edge of fabric, lining up Exterior and Interior side seams. Sew with a 1/4” seam allowance along entire top edge of fabric. Backstitch at the beginning and end of seam to secure stitches in place.
STEP 6: INVERT FABRIC
Pull fabric through 1½” gap so that the Right Side of the fabric is showing. Sew with an 1/8” seam allowance to close the lining gap. Tuck the lining fabric into the exterior fabric.
STEP 7: SEW TOP OF BAG
Pin along top edge of fabric, lining up Exterior and Interior side seams. Sew with an 1/8” seam allowance along entire top edge of fabric. Backstitch at the beginning and end of seam to secure stitches in place.
STEP 8: CREATE DRAWSTRING CHANNEL
On both sides of the exterior of the bag draw a line with an erasable marking tool 1” from the top edge of the bag and again draw a line 2” from the top edge of the bag.
The hole for the bow on the lining fabric should be centered between these two lines.
Sew along the two drawn lines. This will create the channel for the drawstring bow. Only Sew the lining fabric to the exterior fabric and not all four layers of fabric together so that you do not sew the opening of the bag closed.
STEP 9: CREATE CUFF
Flip over the lining fabric of the bag over the exterior of the bag by 3” to create a 3” cuff. Press to hold in place.
STEP 10: INSERT BOW
Attach a safety pin to one short edge of the drawstring bow and feed it through the hole in cuff lining. You will need to press the bow after it is pulled through. Add a wine bottle and then tie a bow.
