This project is designed to be quick and easy! The finished size of the ornament is a manageable 5 inches high by 5 inches wide. Best of all, this tutorial is classified as Beginner difficulty, meaning you don't need any complex skills—just a sewing machine and a willingness to have some fun.

Fabric & Other Materials Needed:

To get started on your adorable ornaments, you'll first need to print a copy of our Ornament Tracing Templates (found on pages 4 and 5 of the PDF Download link above). For the main body of the ornaments, gather an assortment of your favorite scrap fabrics - ensure each scrap is at least 6 inches in size to accommodate both the front and back pieces. Finally, you will need some soft Poly-fil Stuffing to give your ornaments shape, and a length of thin ribbon or cording to create the hanger loop.

Supplies Needed:

You'll also need a few essential sewing tools on hand! Make sure you have a Water Erasable Marker for tracing, sharp Scissors, and plenty of Pins. For turning out those tiny points cleanly, grab a Pointed Tool (like a chopstick or specialized tool), or you can use the Clover Point 2 Point Ruler. Finally, for closing up the ornaments by hand, you'll need Hand-sewing Thread and a Hand-sewing Needle, plus a Thimble if you prefer (it’s totally optional, but helpful!).

Fabric Sides:

STEP 1: Tracing Template onto Fabric

Cut out the Ornament Tracing Templates on pages 4 & 5.

Take two scraps of fabric that are at least 6 inches in size and lay one on top of the other with the RIGHT sides of the fabric facing each other (and the WRONG sides of the fabric facing outward).

Place the template over the two fabrics, ensuring a minimum of 1/2 inch of excess fabric extends beyond all edges.

Pin template to both layers of the fabric.

With a water erasable pen, trace around the outer edge of the template onto the fabric.

STEP 2: Create Ornament Hanger

Use approximately 8” of ribbon or cord to make the ornament hanger. Create a loop and then tie a knot 1” from the end.

STEP 3: Place Ornament Hanger

Once tracing is completed, remove the template and pin both fabrics together with the WRONG sides facing out (RIGHT sides facing each other).

Place the tied ornament ribbon hanger between the two layers of fabric with the knot outside the traced ornament outline. Pin to hold the inner loop in place between the traced ornament lines.

STEP 4: Sew Ornament Outline

Mark a 2” gap with pins along one of the edges of the ornament outline.

Sew along the ornament outline. DO NOT SEW in the 2” space marked by the pins. Backstitch at the beginning and the end of the seam.

STEP 5: Trim Fabric

Once sewing is completed, trim a 1/4” away from the sewn seam.

STEP 6: Turn Fabric Right Side Out & Fill

Pull the fabric through the 2” gap to turn the fabric right side out. Use a pointed tool to push out the corners.

Stuff the ornament with Poly-fil through the 2” gap in the seam. Once the ornament is fully stuffed, fold over the fabric along the unsewn gap opening and pin to hold in place.

STEP 7: Hand Sew Seam Gap Closed

Hand-sew 2” opening closed using a ladder stitch.  The diagram below demonstrates how to sew this stitch.
