Fabric Spotlight: Cotton + Steel Fabrics
Cotton + Steel fabrics is a popular fabric line within our shop and the quilting industry. Known for their high-quality fabrics and contemporary designs, this fabric is a favorite for quilters and sewists alike. This fabric brand was founded in 2013 by designers Melody Miller, Rashida Coleman-Hale, Alexia Abegg, Kim Knight, and Sarah Watts. They worked together to create fresh modern fabric collections that highlighted their individual talents while still working and coordinating together.
The founders left the company in 2018 to form their own new brand – Ruby Star Society. New and innovative surface designers, illustrators, and graphic artists have since joined Cotton + Steel to continue the original mission of creating contemporary fabric lines while maintaining the high-quality cotton and screen-printing standards that Cotton + Steel is known throughout the industry for.

Cotton + Steel Basics
The Cotton + Steel Basics collection is filled with simple designs and modern colors that are perfect for backgrounds, quilt backings, trims, blenders, and a great substitute for solid colors. This collection has been expanded and the fabrics just arrived in the shop!
Canyon Springs - Ash Cascade
Another recent arrival to our shop is the Canyon Springs fabric collection by designer Ash Cascade. This beautiful line is inspired by nature. Hiking through the forest, picking wildflowers, and enjoying the beauty of outdoors are all represented in this lovely new fabric line. We can envision a quilt in this fabric that you can cozy up in during an evening bonfire after a day of exploring.
Bon Voyage – Rifle Paper Company
We chose our favorite prints from the new Bon Voyage line designed by Rifle Paper Company. These fabrics continue the tradition of hand-painted illustrations and distinctive color palettes that are the heart of Rifle Paper Company. These beautiful floral designs and simple striped fabrics coordinate with the Rifle Basics collection. We even have a stunning canvas called Meadow in the color flax. A Squad Tote bag would be adorable in this fabric.
Good Vibes
The Good Vibes fabric line is a collaborative collection featuring various modern graphic designers from Cotton + Steel. Cheerful colors of blue, purple, teal, and poppy round out the color palette. There is both warmth and calmness in this collection. Only good vibes here.
Garden & Globe – Paper Raven Company
Paper Raven Company was created by Erin McManness. The original focus of the company was creating environmentally friendly stationery and paper goods. She has since grown her company to include licensing for gifts, fabrics, and home décor. Paper Raven Company is known for hand-lettering and floral prints. The new Garden & Globe fabric collection continues the beauty and design that is at the core of Erin McManness’s work.
Nightfall
The Nightfall fabric line is a collaborative collection of designers from Cotton + Steel Fabrics. These fabrics feature lovely neutral tones and patterns. A few fabrics within this line will include soft, metallic prints to add a subtle sparkle. This collection is perfect for blending with bolder prints or creating a project of gentle hues.
Penny Cress Garden – Megan Carter
The penny cress plant was the inspiration for the stunning Penny Cress Garden fabric line. Megan Carter is a British artist. The beauty of nature, florals, and soft colors are all featured in this beautiful fabric collection.

Sewing Projects Created with Cotton + Steel Fabrics
Cotton + Steel fabric is just a dream to sew with. Here are some of the many projects we have created with this beautiful fabric.
Squad Tote Bag
The Squad Tote bag pattern is designed by Erica Loomis, owner of Little Fabric Shop. It was sewn using On A Spring Day fabric. This bag was created as a thank you gift for girlfriends that helped her out with a local craft show. We all need to have a squad helping us out!
Campfire Glow Quilt
When Then Came June introduced her new Campfire Glow quilt pattern, she held a sew along. We were one of the sponsors of this event. We also sewed along using Cotton + Steel Basics fabrics. We have one kit left if you would like to create this beautiful quilt pattern.
Travel Jewelry Organizer
The Travel Jewelry Organizer pattern is also designed by Erica Loomis. We used Rifle Paper Company fabric to create this pouch. This bag is perfect for travel. It features see-through storage zipper pockets, soft batting interfacing, and can easily tuck into a suitcase or carry-on.
Pie Trivet
In celebration of National Pie Day, Little Fabric Shop created a Pie Trivet sewing tutorial. We used Under the Apple Tree fabric to make this adorable trivet.
